Become a substitute educator in Minnesota schools.

A Kelly Education recruiter will walk you through the specific requirements, as they can vary by district.  However, typical requirements in Minnesota are as follows:

Substitute Teacher:

• 3 Year Short Call License (MN Substitute Permit) OR MN Educators License (Tier 1-4)
  • Cost of 3 Year Short Call License: $90.25
• Proof of education: Bachelor's degree or currently enrolled in a teacher preparation program with student teaching completed.
  • Proof of education also required if you want access to paraeducator assignments.
• Official sealed transcripts.
• Fingerprinting is required, and is part of the license application process.

Paraeducator:

• Proof of education: High school diploma or GED minimum.
• Fingerprinting is required. Kelly Education is offering free fingerprinting onsite at our Bloomington, MN, office.

Highly Qualified Paraeducator:

• Proof of education: Associates degree, 60 college credits, OR high school diploma/GED with a passing Parapro Assessment score of 455 or higher.
  • Kelly Education is offering the Parapro Assessment, free of charge, to individuals who can travel to our Bloomington, MN, office. (the assessment is not available virtually; must be onsite).
• U.S. education evaluations or foreign educations are not acceptable per the Minnesota Department of Education; must also provide passing Parapro scores.
• Fingerprinting is required. Kelly Education is offering free fingerprinting onsite at our Bloomington, MN office.

While every role in education has unique requirements, having an Education degree or prior work experience is typically not required for most roles.

Pay rates are set by the district, and vary by district. A Kelly Education recruiter will discuss specific pay rates for the district in which you are interested. 

In general, pay rates are as follows:

• Substitute Teacher: $110-210/day 
• Substitute Paraeducator or Highly Qualified Paraeducator: $13-20/hour
• Substitute Clerical: $13-19/hour
• Substitute Food Service Worker: $10-19/hour
• Substitute Custodian: $10-19/hour

Payday is weekly on Fridays.

2. Fill out a prescreen form. This will be sent to you to confirm that a few minimum requirements are met.
3. Join a virtual group interview. Learn more about our available positions in your area and see if a job in education is a good fit.
4. Complete our online classroom management training. This free, required training will prepare you to be a confident in your new role.
5. Pass a background check. Fingerprinting and background checks are completed to ensure a safe environment for students.
6. Attend our paid orientation. Learn about the policies and procedures for working with Kelly Education and the education institution.
7. Start working!

Most positions allow for flexible schedules, however there is typically enough work opportunity if a steady schedule is what you are looking for.
