Kelly Education is proud to celebrate the incredible impact of educators across the country through our Substitute Educator of the Year program. This recognition highlights educators who bring dedication, compassion, and energy into their roles every day—supporting students, strengthening classrooms, and uplifting entire school communities.

Trina Kohler is a building substitute teacher at Daniels Canyon Elementary in Wasatch, Utah. After 22 years in special education support, she discovered her passion in the flexibility and connection that substitute teaching provides.

She is now being honored in our Substitute Educator of the Year program for her dedication, adaptability, and meaningful impact on her school community.

In this Q&A, Trina shares her story.

How did you get started as a substitute teacher?
Trina: My path started in special education while in college when I started working with students with mild-to-moderate special needs. I did that for 22 years, then decided to go back to school to become a regular education teacher, and part of that process required substitute teaching.

Once I started substitute teaching, I realized I loved it. Instead of teaching just one grade, I got to work across the entire school. I could see different teaching styles, connect with more students, and watch their growth year after year. It was inspiring. I actually stopped pursuing my degree because I knew I had found what I truly enjoyed.

What makes being a building substitute unique?
Trina: As a building substitute teacher, I’m here every single day—whether a teacher is absent or not. If I’m not covering a class, I’m supporting teachers, helping students, and jumping in wherever I’m needed.

At first, it was a big adjustment. I was used to having a structured schedule, and suddenly I didn’t always know where I’d be each day. But over time, I learned to embrace that unpredictability.

Now, I love it. I can step into any classroom—kindergarten, fifth grade, art, PE—and just jump into teaching. The teachers trust me to carry out their lessons, and that trust means everything. The variety keeps things exciting, and every day brings something new.

What do you enjoy most about your role?
Trina: It’s the relationships. I get to know every student in the school, and they get to know me. Watching them grow—from preschool all the way up—is incredibly special.

I love when students recognize me years later and say, “Hey, Ms. Kohler!” It’s those moments that make this job so meaningful. They’ll show me drawings, tell me stories, or share something they’re proud of—and that connection just fills my heart.

What inspired you to pursue education?
Trina: Yes, absolutely. Growing up in a military family, I moved every couple of years. In junior high, I was shy and kept to myself.

Then I had a history teacher who completely changed things for me. She made learning fun and helped me come out of my shell. She saw something in me and encouraged it. That experience stayed with me—I realized I wanted to be that person for someone else.

What advice would you give to new substitute teachers?
Trina: Don’t be afraid to ask questions. Get to know the team around you—they understand the students and can offer valuable insight.

When you collaborate with other teachers, it creates a better experience for everyone, especially the students. I always tell new subs: you’re not alone. There are so many people willing to support you if you just ask.

What advice do you share with your students?
Trina: I always tell them that making mistakes is okay—in fact, it’s important. Mistakes mean you’re learning.

We celebrate mistakes in my classroom because they help us grow. Nobody is perfect, and everyone learns at their own pace. If students can understand that, it builds confidence and helps them stay open to new challenges.

What would you say to someone considering substitute teaching?
Trina: If you want to inspire others and make a difference, this is such a rewarding path. You get to be part of students’ lives in a meaningful way, even if it’s just for a day.

It’s not always predictable, but it’s always worth it. The connections you build and the impact you have—it stays with you.
