As a new therapist in a school-based setting, you’ll likely notice that schools operate quite differently from how clinics, hospitals, home health, or other outpatient settings work. You’ll adjust the therapy programming you provide to benefit students in a school setting.

That’s why our experienced directors and therapists at Kelly Pediatric Therapy developed (and keep adding to) our toolkit called The Capable Classroom. This resource houses a library of specialized programs designed specifically to support schools, teachers, and their students. The toolkit is filled with proven techniques that have truly become best practices.

What is The Capable Classroom?

The Capable Classroom is a suite of Tier 1 and Tier 2 interventions that ensure every student has access to learning. With multifaceted challenges such as evolving student needs and growing caseloads, you need solutions that streamline your support. The Capable Classroom helps students achieve their therapy goals more efficiently while supporting you in delivering effective, classroom-wide interventions.

These programs, created by our experienced, skilled clinical directors and therapists, provide easy to follow instructions that teachers, aides, parent volunteers, and paraprofessionals can implement independently. This approach helps extend your reach while focusing your expertise where it’s needed most.

Resources that empower classrooms.

Whether you’re dealing with increased referrals or notice a specific need in the classroom, The Capable Classroom can offer a solution. These ready-to-implement programs help you address student needs and extend support beyond direct therapy sessions.

Here are some popular interventions in The Capable Classroom toolbox:

  • Pencil Power™: A 6-week or 12-week supplemental handwriting instruction program specifically designed for K-2 students. Classrooms can access an optional board game to practice key pre-writing and writing skills beyond the therapy setting.
  • Pencil Power - Cursive Edition: Developed by a licensed OT, this five-stage “Motion Academy, is a fine motor development program supporting teachers who are re-introducing cursive handwriting into the classroom.

As a busy behavioral health analyst or related services therapist, you can’t be everywhere at once. The Capable Classroom offers a way for students to make meaningful progress, even when you’re not there.

Here are some of the top benefits of The Capable Classroom:

  • Caseload management: You can support more students efficiently by extending services beyond direct therapy sessions.
