Batch Reactor Operator

Role Summary

The Batch Reactor Operator will operate a 1-gallon batch reactor, once trained, under specified conditions to support global catalyst qualification, troubleshoot plant issues, and test new catalysts. This position is essential for generating catalyst performance data, supporting research initiatives, and ensuring compliance with safety and regulatory standards.

Key Responsibilities

  • Operate the batch reactor to conduct polymerization experiments according to established protocols.

  • Package and dispose of waste in compliance with RCRA regulations.

  • Prepare polymer and catalyst samples for analysis and testing.

  • Document and communicate experimental results accurately.

  • Perform basic laboratory analyses (e.g., gravimetric analysis, titrations).

  • Carry out general housekeeping tasks to maintain a safe and clean laboratory environment.

  • Conduct reactor maintenance, including tubing and valve replacements, pump repairs, vessel cleaning, and instrument replacements.

  • Work closely with research chemists in the Catalyst R&D Group and contribute critical data for catalyst development.

Required Skills & Qualifications

  • Education:

    • Minimum Associate’s degree in a technical field with a cumulative GPA of 2.7+, OR

    • At least 2 years of relevant experience (e.g., as a lab technician, reactor operator, chem tech, or in a related computer science role).


  • Technical Proficiency:

    • Mechanical aptitude and troubleshooting skills.

    • Proficient in using computers and software such as Excel and Word.

    • Ability to calculate solution dilutions, concentrations, unit conversions, and molar ratios.

    • Understanding of flammable and pyrophoric materials and their safe handling.

    • Able to look up physical property data (boiling points, flash points, vapor pressure, etc.).


  • Soft Skills:

    • Strong verbal and written communication skills.

    • Effective at collaborating with coworkers at all levels and independently reaching out for clarification when needed.

    • Attention to detail, critical thinking skills, and reliability.

    • Ability to take ownership of data quality and laboratory safety.

Safety & Physical Requirements

  • Ability to lift up to 50 lbs as needed.

  • Use of proper PPE as required for the work location and tasks.

Work Hours

  • Night shift only:

    • 4 days per week

    • 12-hour shifts
