Radiochemist I / II

Location: Burbank, CA (Onsite)
Pay Range: $34.00 – $44.00/hour (depending on relevant experience)

Kelly Science is seeking a Radiochemist I or II to support isotope production operations at our Burbank facility. This role involves performing radiochemistry procedures, supporting isotope manufacturing, and contributing to process improvements while maintaining strict safety and radiation control standards.


Key Responsibilities

Radiochemistry Production

  • Perform radiochemistry procedures safely, efficiently, and in a timely manner to support production-scale isotope manufacturing.

  • Independently execute and optimize complex radiochemical procedures including solution preparation, cation and anion separations, and isotope purification.

  • Coordinate production schedules for high-activity materials to ensure timely fulfillment of internal and external orders.

  • Serve as a technical owner for assigned isotope product lines, ensuring supply continuity and reliable process performance.

  • Provide technical guidance to production chemists regarding batch production methods and chemical concerns.

Analytical Testing & Radioassay

  • Conduct radioassay procedures using specialized radiochemical instrumentation including:

    • Ion chambers

    • Liquid scintillation counters (LSCs)

    • Beta/gamma counters

    • Alpha counters

    • HPGe detectors

    • Analytical balances

Process Development & Continuous Improvement

  • Develop, validate, implement, and document improvements to radiochemical purification methods.

  • Update and maintain controlled procedures to ensure consistent and reliable production processes.

  • Evaluate workflow, shielding, and radiochemical handling techniques to reduce radiation exposure and contamination risk in accordance with ALARA principles.

Inventory & Operations Support

  • Maintain inventory of radioactive and non-radioactive materials required for radiochemistry procedures.

  • Maintain accurate electronic inventory records and transaction documentation.

  • Provide technical support to sales and inventory management, including labor/time estimation for new materials.

Equipment & Safety

  • Maintain, calibrate, and operate equipment required for radiochemistry procedures.

  • Assist with cleaning, decontamination, and maintenance of radiochemistry workspaces.

  • Collaborate with Health Physics teams to identify and mitigate safety risks.

  • Support cross-training and competency development within the radiochemistry team.

Qualifications

Education

  • BS or MS in Chemistry, Radiochemistry, or Chemical Engineering

Experience

  • Radiochemist I: 2–5 years of relevant experience (Academic research may count toward total years of experience if conducted in a radiochemistry-relevant field.)

  • Radiochemist II: 5+ years of relevant experience including independent problem-solving and technical leadership

Required Skills

  • Experience with laboratory equipment such as pipettes and analytical balances is required.

  • Ability to safely operate hot cells, gloveboxes, or fume hoods

  • Experience working independently and collaboratively within a team

  • Strong troubleshooting and problem-solving skills

  • Effective written and verbal communication

  • Ability to learn new processes and identify opportunities for improvement

  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office Suite

  • Completion of a chemistry-based math test while on-site. A periodic table and scientific calculator will be provided.

Additional Requirements

  • Prior experience handling radioactive materials preferred

  • Ability to learn and operate radiochemical instrumentation

  • Must be able to travel occasionally and work at the Valencia facility when required
