CHEMIST RESEARCH TECHNOLOGIST

Today, Kelly Scientific is searching for an experienced Chemist Research Technologist to join our team at one of the largest oil, gas and petrochemical companies in the world, located in Baytown, TX.

OVERVIEW
Research technologists in this role support a diverse set of catalyst development projects in a dynamic research environment with global impact.
Daily responsibilities will include the following:

  • Working safely and independently in a laboratory environment

  • Technical communication with Ph.D. chemists

  • Electronic data reporting

  • Interfacing with advanced computer software

RESPONSIBILITIES (Subject to Project Needs):

  • Running and maintaining laboratory-scale high-pressure batch reactors to test catalyst reactivity

    • Requires willingness to develop and apply mechanical aptitude

    • Troubleshooting mechanical failures pertaining to the reactor

    • Involves detailed, process-oriented work


  • Handling and manipulating air- and moisture-sensitive materials

  • Performing a broad range of experiments to inform catalyst, product, and process research

  • Executing multi-step organic and organometallic synthesis using a combination of bench chemistry and air-/moisture-free techniques

    • Includes application of purification techniques, including column chromatography and crystallization

    • Includes product analysis via spectroscopic techniques, such as NMR spectroscopy and X-ray crystallography


  • Supporting high throughput experimentation

    • May include writing design libraries, sample preparation, and product collection/analysis

REQUIREMENTS

  • BS in Chemistry (required); MS in chemistry (preferred)

  • Willingness to operate and maintain high pressure lab reactors (required); prior mechanical experience (helpful)

  • Experience with glove box or Schlenk line techniques (helpful)

  • Experience with NMR spectroscopy, including analysis of standard spectral data (helpful)

  • Experience with handling and manipulation of air- and moisture-sensitive materials, including pyrophoric reagents (preferred)

  • Experience with multistep synthetic organic, organometallic, or inorganic chemistry, including product purification and analysis (preferred)

  • Advanced knowledge of various chemistry-related computer software (helpful)

  • Strong problem-solving and critical thinking skills

  • Capable of independently searching, reading, and interpreting scientific literature on a chemistry-related topic

  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills

  • Willingness to learn and apply new technical skills and information
