Mechanical Designer – Industrial Automation (SolidWorks Focus)
Location: Norwood, MA (On-site | 6+ month contract)
Position Summary
Are you passionate about designing the next generation of custom industrial automation equipment? We are looking for a talented Mechanical Designer with advanced SolidWorks skills to join our team on a long-term contract basis. In this role, you’ll drive mechanical projects from concept through production, shaping equipment and safety guarding for a range of industries. Key Responsibilities
- Design and develop mechanical components, assemblies, and systems for industrial automation equipment using SolidWorks and IronCAD.
- Create detailed 3D models, drawings, bills of materials (BOMs), and fabrication documentation.
- Participate actively in concept development and cross-functional design reviews to ensure optimal project outcomes.
- Collaborate and communicate with vendors and suppliers to source components and resolve technical challenges.
- Maintain accurate design records and engineering documentation.
- Support continuous improvement initiatives, helping to refine internal design processes and standards.
Required Qualifications
- 3–8+ years of hands-on mechanical design experience, ideally within industrial automation or machinery environments.
- Advanced proficiency in SolidWorks (parts, assemblies, drawings, configurations).
- Proven background in producing high-quality manufacturing drawings.
- Familiarity with standard industrial components such as sensors, motors, gearboxes, and fasteners.
Preferred Qualifications
- Strong grasp of mechanical principles, including pneumatics, actuators, linear motion systems (rails, ball screws, conveyors), and structural design.
- Associate’s or Bachelor’s degree in Mechanical Engineering, Mechanical Design, or a related discipline.
- Direct experience designing automated manufacturing equipment, robotics, or custom machinery.
- Working knowledge of PDM/PLM systems (SolidWorks PDM preferred).
- Understanding of basic controls integration, including PLCs, sensors, and wiring layouts.
- Proficiency with sheet metal, weldments, and machined component design.
- Hands-on shop or assembly experience is a plus.
