Client: Blue Cross Blue Shield of South Carolina
Location: Columbia, SC 
Schedule: Monday–Friday, 9:00 AM – 5:00 PM
Pay Rate: $17.00/hour (non-negotiable)
Position Type: Full-Time, Contract-to-Hire

Position Overview

Blue Cross Blue Shield of South Carolina is seeking a detail-oriented Healthcare Appeals Specialist to join the Corporate Appeals team. This role is responsible for conducting non-medical reviews, processing appeal and redetermination correspondence, and ensuring all activities are completed accurately and within required timelines.

The ideal candidate will have strong data entry and administrative experience, excellent written communication skills, and the ability to manage multiple priorities in a fast-paced environment. This position initially requires onsite training, with the opportunity to transition to a remote work arrangement after successful completion of training and demonstrated performance.

Key Responsibilities

  • Conduct non-medical reviews of healthcare appeals and process redetermination letters with a high degree of accuracy and timeliness.

  • Prepare, review, and maintain appeal-related documentation and correspondence.

  • Analyze workloads and generate departmental reports using various software applications.

  • Update and maintain department letters, templates, and supporting documentation as needed.

  • Gather and compile documentation for legal inquiries, audits, and administrative requests.

  • Ensure compliance with company policies, regulatory requirements, and departmental procedures.

  • Maintain accurate records and support efficient workflow management within the Corporate Appeals department.

Required Qualifications

Education

  • High School Diploma or GED required.

Experience

  • Minimum of 2 years of experience in an administrative, clerical, healthcare, insurance, customer service, or related field.

  • Strong data entry and document-processing experience preferred.

Required Skills

  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office applications, including Word and Excel.

  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills.

  • Strong grammar, spelling, and proofreading abilities.

  • Exceptional organizational and time-management skills.

  • Ability to work independently while managing multiple priorities.

  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills.

  • Sound judgment and attention to detail.

Work Environment

  • Standard office environment during training period.

  • Training duration: approximately 4–6 weeks onsite.

  • Eligible to transition to remote work following training and successful performance evaluation.

  • Candidates must reside within one hour of the Blue Cross Blue Shield of South Carolina office in Columbia, SC.

Additional Information

  • This is a 100% data-entry and document-processing focused role.

  • Manager will conduct an initial phone screening followed by a possible onsite or Microsoft Teams interview.

  • Sponsorship is not available for this position.

  • This opportunity offers the potential to convert to a permanent position based on performance and business needs.

Preferred Candidate Profile

The successful candidate is highly detail-oriented, comfortable working with large volumes of data and documentation, and thrives in a structured environment where accuracy, productivity, and adherence to deadlines are critical. Experience in healthcare, insurance claims, appeals processing, or administrative support is highly desirable.
