Special Needs Elementary Building Substitute in Reading School District
Position Overview
We are seeking dedicated, compassionate, and flexible individuals to serve as Elementary Special Needs Building Substitutes. This position supports self-contained special education classrooms serving students in kindergarten through 2nd Grade (ages 5-8). Building substitutes provide instructional and behavioral support while helping maintain the structured routines and positive learning environment essential to student success.
Immediate openings are available, and candidates should be available to start as soon as possible.
Qualifications
Required
- Bachelor’s Degree from an accredited college or university
- Substitute certification is not required
- Ability to work effectively with young children with special needs
- Strong communication, collaboration, and organizational skills
Preferred
- Experience working in special education settings
- Experience supporting students with behavioral, developmental, or learning needs
- Classroom, childcare, or educational support experience
Position Responsibilities
- Support students in self-contained special education classrooms serving 8-10 students (typically 8 students whenever possible).
- Follow established classroom schedules and daily routines designed to support student consistency and success.
- Implement teacher lesson plans and instructional activities as provided.
- Support students in achieving academic, behavioral, and social-emotional goals.
- Implement behavior support plans, accommodations, and modifications outlined in student IEPs.
- Collaborate with teachers, paraprofessionals, therapists, and administrators.
- Maintain a safe, structured, and supportive learning environment.
- Assist with transitions, classroom activities, and other duties as assigned.
Classroom Information
- Student Age Range: 5-8 years old
- Grade Levels: Kindergarten through 2nd Grade
- Class Size: Approximately 8-10 students
- Student Supports: All students have Individualized Education Programs (IEPs), accommodations, and behavior plans.
- Access to Information: Building substitutes will have access to student plans and accommodations to effectively support student needs.
- Daily Schedule: Classrooms follow a consistent daily schedule and routine. While lesson plans are often provided, substitutes should be prepared to adapt to classroom needs while maintaining established routines.
