About the Position
We are seeking a dependable, detail-oriented Insurance Specialist to join our small, close-knit office in Richland, WA.
This position focuses on the insurance verification and financial side of the patient process. You will be responsible for gathering and verifying insurance information, determining benefits and patient responsibility, obtaining necessary authorizations, and completing the required front-end paperwork and documentation so claims can be properly billed by our professional billing service.
This position does not require the candidate to perform actual medical claim billing or medical coding. A professional billing service handles the submission and billing of claims.
Key Responsibilities
- Verify patient insurance eligibility and benefits
- Review insurance coverage and determine patient financial responsibility
- Obtain and document insurance information accurately
- Complete required front-end insurance paperwork and documentation
- Obtain prior authorizations and other required approvals
- Communicate with insurance companies regarding coverage and requirements
- Ensure all necessary information is collected before services are provided and claims are sent to the professional billing service
- Identify and resolve insurance discrepancies or missing information
- Maintain accurate patient and insurance records
- Communicate financial and insurance information professionally with patients
- Assist with scheduling and general administrative duties
- Serve as a backup receptionist when needed
- Answer phones, greet patients, and assist with front-office responsibilities
- Support the team with other administrative tasks as needed
What We’re Looking For
- Previous medical insurance, insurance verification, healthcare administration, or medical office experience
- Strong understanding of insurance eligibility, benefits, authorizations, and patient responsibility
- Comfortable communicating with insurance companies
- Excellent attention to detail and accuracy
- Strong organizational and follow-through skills
- Comfortable handling confidential and financial information
- Able to work independently and take ownership of responsibilities
- Positive, professional, dependable personality
- Comfortable working in a small office environment
- Willingness to assist with reception/front-office duties
- College degree preferred
- Medical coding is NOT required
- Medical claim billing/submission experience is NOT required
Important Distinction
You will NOT be responsible for submitting or billing medical claims.
A professional billing service handles the actual claim billing. The Insurance Specialist’s responsibility is to make sure the insurance information, verification, authorizations, patient responsibility, and required documentation are accurate and complete on the front end so the professional biller has everything needed to process the claim.
Schedule & Work Environment
- Approximately 30 hours per week
- Flexible hours between 9:00 AM–4:00 PM
- Up to a one-hour lunch can be accommodated
- Direct-hire, part-time position
- Small, friendly medical office
- Opportunity to train alongside the current Insurance Specialist for a smooth transition
Ideal Candidate
We’re looking for someone who is accurate, dependable, positive, professional, and easy to work with. The ability to work independently is important, but so is being a supportive member of a small team.
