Extractor/Wash Technician

Location: Temperanceville, VA
Pay Rate: $18 per hour
Shift: 1st shift – Start time will vary between 6:00 and 8:00 AM, 10-hour shifts Monday-Friday, onsite

Job Summary:
Kelly Services is seeking a Temporary Extractor/Wash Technician to process material in a sterile work environment. This includes extracting blood from horseshoe crabs and preparing laboratory materials.  No certification or licensure required.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Inspect and verify crabs for injuries and unresponsiveness before extraction.

  • Extract blood from racked crabs using a 12-gauge needle.

  • Collect blood into bottles and deliver to the laboratory.

  • Process prepared material, adding washing solution, agitating, and dispensing into tubes for centrifugation.

  • Centrifuge material to separate desired components.

  • Assess and measure desired material in tubes.

  • Add sterile water to tubes based on required measurements and agitate.

  • Assemble transfer pump equipment for salt water and NEM solutions.

  • Prepare and accurately dispense salt water and NEM (N-ethylmaleimide) solutions into bottles.

  • Daily housekeeping: clean walls, floors, and tables within the tent area.

  • Follow all Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs) and complete required documentation.

  • Perform other related duties as assigned.

Physical Demands:

  • Full range of motion of arms and upper body required.

  • Regular standing, walking, repetitive hand use.

  • Visual demands: close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and focus adjustment.

Work Environment:

  • Sterile setting, protective gear required (goggles, face shield, surgical mask, cap, gloves, scrubs, boots).

  • Exposure to sharp objects, chemicals, biohazards, live animals.

  • Potential exposure to shellfish allergens, unpleasant odors, wet/humid/warm conditions.
