POSITION SUMMARY: 

We are seeking a highly skilled Biologist to join the National Institutes of Health, specifically within the Genome Analysis Core. The ideal candidate will have a Bachelor’s degree in Biology, Life Sciences, or a related discipline, with at least four years of relevant experience, including two years in a laboratory setting. This role involves performing a wide range of complex procedures and techniques, including cell culture, molecular biology, DNA/RNA analysis, and next-generation sequencing. The successful candidate will conduct research, calibrate and operate various laboratory instruments, interact with a diverse scientific community, and maintain accurate experiment records. Additionally, this position requires overseeing the project pipeline for the Genome Analysis Core, developing novel protocols for sequencing, managing next-generation sequencing equipment, and implementing improvements to enhance efficiency and quality. Training of technicians and students on automated robots and laboratory equipment is also a key responsibility. This role offers the opportunity to collaborate on advancing technologies and to serve as a liaison between the Genome Analysis Core and external vendors. 

 

TASKS. The contractor shall: 

  • Perform a wide range of complex procedures and techniques including cell culture, molecular biology, DNA/RNA analysis, DNA/RNA isolation, DNA/RNA purification, DNA/RNA next generation (Illumina) sequencing, flow cytometry, and gene cloning. 


  • Conduct experiments, data analysis, and oversee the Genome Analysis Core project pipeline. 


  • Calibrate and operate a variety of laboratory instruments under GLP guidelines. 


  • Develop novel sequencing protocols, manage sequencing equipment, and improve existing methods. 


  • Design and implement protocols into SOPs for training materials. 


  • Assist with training on the usage of automated robots and laboratory instruments. 


  • Stay informed on current scientific methods and incorporate breakthrough methods into workflows. 


  • Collaborate with scientific engineers to advance automation technologies for future testing. 


  • Facilitate project onboarding and monitor timelines for collaborations within the Genome Analysis Core. 


  • Serve as a liaison between the Genome Analysis Core and external vendors. 

 

REQUIREMENTS. The contractor must have: 

  • Bachelor’s degree in Biology, Life Sciences, or a related discipline. 


  • Minimum of 4 years of related experience. 


  • Proficiency in molecular biology techniques, nucleic acid isolations, PCR, and qPCR. 


  • Experience with high-throughput library preparation for NGS and sample quality assessment. 


  • Demonstrated ability to maintain accurate and detailed records. 


  • Knowledge of proper laboratory disposal methods and safety procedures.
