Mechanical Commissioning Engineer (3-Month Project) – Data Center | Omaha, NE
Immediate Start | Weekly On-Site Travel Required | Competitive Contract Opportunity
Project Overview:
Join a fast-paced, mission-critical commissioning team supporting a major data center build in Omaha, Nebraska. We’re seeking an experienced Mechanical Commissioning Engineer to supplement our client’s mechanical team and help manage increased workload as project activities intensify. This is a 3-month contract requiring full-time presence on site (Monday–Friday).
Minimum Qualifications:
- BSc/MSc in Mechanical Engineering or equivalent experience
- At least 2 years of mission-critical project experience, OR 4+ years commissioning mechanical/building systems projects
- Commissioning experience in data centers or similar environments highly preferred
- Familiarity with ASHRAE/BCxA guidelines (preferred)
- Strong organization, analytical, communication, and problem-solving skills
- Ability to work independently and as part of a team
Essential Job Functions:
- Commission mechanical, plumbing, fire alarm, and suppression systems in data center environments to ensure operations meet client goals
- Review system designs for compliance and assist in developing commissioning plans and procedures
- Perform commissioning activities from design through operation and occupancy, following best practices and client standards
- Attend and document equipment factory tests; conduct functional testing using test instrumentation and analyze results
- Thoroughly document all field procedures, issues, and outcomes using standard templates/online apps
- Report on system performance and provide technical recommendations to resolve issues
- Coordinate and execute field activities with project teams, contributing input on documentation and scheduling
- Prepare and maintain daily commissioning reports, assist with training junior engineers, and respond professionally to client inquiries
- Comply with all company, client, and project safety protocols
Technical Expertise Required:
- Hands-on experience with mechanical, plumbing, and fire/life safety systems and controls:
- Chillers (air/water cooled), cooling towers, direct evaporative cooling, air handlers, CRAC units, boilers, backup generators, turbines, fan coil units, DX split systems, process water plants, chemical injection systems, VFDs, VRV systems, rooftop units, VAV units, makeup air units, hydronic pumps, leak detection, heat trace, DDC & PLC controls, fire pumps & controllers, pre-action fire suppression, fire alarm panels, VESDA, domestic water pumps and heaters.

- Basic understanding of BMS and EPMS preferred
- Programming and controls experience a plus
Travel & Work Schedule:
- Weekly travel required unless local to Omaha, NE; must be on-site Monday–Friday (home weekends)
- Work hours may vary—tasks are set weekly by the customer, aligned with project milestones
