Job details

Job Title: Asbestos Laboratory Analyst (TEM/PCM)
Location: Chesterfield, VA
Relocation: Relocation assistance offered
Schedule: Monday–Friday, 8:00 AM–5:00 PM (some overtime required)
Pay Rate: $22–$27/hour (based on experience and certifications)


Duties & Responsibilities

  • Perform sample processing, documentation, and preparation of laboratory specimens

  • Conduct analysis of bulk and air samples for asbestos mineral fibers using Transmission Electron Microscopy (TEM)

  • Quantify asbestos presence and identify additional natural or artificial sample components

  • Document asbestos findings, observations, and characteristics in a Laboratory Information Management System (LIMS)

  • Implement and follow established quality control procedures

  • Maintain strict adherence to laboratory safety protocols at all times

  • Comply with EPA, NVLAP, ELAP, OSHA, and NIOSH standards for asbestos identification

  • Prepare PCM slides, perform fiber counting, and complete QC review in accordance with NIOSH 7400 Method

Required Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in Physics, Environmental Science, or a related scientific field, or completion of a TEM Asbestos training course

  • Background in Geology and/or Mineralogy is a plus

  • Strong understanding of laboratory safety protocols, including proper use of PPE, fume hoods, and sample containment procedures

  • Excellent communication skills with the ability to multitask in a fast-paced environment

  • Willingness to work extended hours and occasional weekends as needed

  • Must hold active, relevant certifications for asbestos analysis (required for consideration)

Preferred Experience

  • 2+ years of TEM or PCM asbestos testing experience with familiarity in regulatory and analytical standards, including:

    • NYELAP, NVLAP, ASTM D6480 and D5575, CARB 435

    • EPA 600, interim methods, R-93/116

    • NIOSH 7400/7402/9002, AHERA regulations

    • Canadian asbestos testing standards


  • PCM analysts must hold a NIOSH 582 certification

  • Coursework in mineralogy, petrology, sedimentology, or materials science

  • Experience as a research assistant or undergraduate researcher involving microscopy, sample preparation, or mineral identification

  • Experience with both TEM and PCM analysis preferred (training available for candidates with experience in only one method)
