 Kelly Science, Engineering, Technology, and Telecom is seeking a Product Design Engineer for a long-term contract with one of our top clients.  This is an R&D environment in which they design, prototype, and test the surgical instruments that are attached to the Surgical Robots. It is a major hub focusing on medical technology, including product development, research, and engineering roles.

A Medical Device Manufacturing site located in Blue Ash, Ohio.  This role would be 100% onsite in Cincinnati, OH.

High-level Design Engineer contractor. This would be a ~9-month assignment. Description of responsibilities, qualifications, and desired experience below.
Product Development an R&D environment in which they design, prototype and test the surgical instruments that attach to the Surgical Robot.
Seniority target: Senior engineer or Staff engineer level. This individual will be an acting design lead for a Sterilization Tray project, supporting multiple other projects.

RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Ability to lead new product development projects within Surgical Robotics as a design engineer

  • Design, iterate, and evaluate product concepts quickly and effectively via prototype builds, laboratory testing, and/or computer simulations

  • Lead development of design requirements and rationale based on user needs and product function; translate design requirements into concepts /solutions while balancing tradeoffs and business impact

  • Develop complex test methods, design/build fixtures and systems for testing

  • Generate/process/analyze advanced engineering data to meet design spec’s

  • Commercialize new products via the design control process, applying good documentation practices, spanning from feasibility to V&V through launch

  • Lead detailed reviews of designs, requirements, Spec’s, etc. and effectively communicate technical information in written and verbal forms across the organization, including status, opportunities, risks, and recommendations

QUALIFICATIONS

    • Bachelor of Science in Mechanical Engineering, Biomedical Engineering, or related science/engineering field (Master’s preferred)

    • Must-haves: medical device and design control experience, supplier collaboration, prototyping/testing, CAD, tolerance stack, DFM

    • Nice-to-have: DOE experience, FEA, complex mechanisms and/or robotics design

    • Seniority target: Senior engineer or Staff engineer level. This individual will be an acting design lead for a Sterilization Tray project, supporting multiple other projects.

    • On-site model: fully on-site 4-5 days per week

    • Tooling/process: nothing specific is required

    • 6 years minimum of product development/design experience required (5 years minimum w/ Master’s)

    • Advanced mechanical design and analysis skills, including expertise with complex mechanism design, machine elements, and mechanical interfaces

    • Proven experience working with mfg engineers/suppliers on DFM/A, Design to Cost, and prototyping to optimize designs for manufacturability and reliability

    • Expertise with developing and using 3D CAD models (SolidWorks preferred), GD&T, free-body diagrams, strength of materials, and DOE’s

    • Expertise developing and applying complex tolerance analysis, stress-strain analysis, FEA, simulated use tests, verification tests, statistical analysis, and detailed risk analysis

    • Proven experience with engineering investigations, problem solving, root cause, prototype rework, component modification, and complex risk mitigation

    • Outstanding multi-functional communication, collaboration, and teaming skills with ability to lead cross functional meetings and influence cross functional decisions.

    • Systems-based design experience, including integration of cross-disciplinary technologies (e.g., mechanical, electrical, controls, software)

    • Ability to work in Cincinnati

DESIRED EXPERIENCE
 

    • Experience in the design, development, and commercialization of medical devices with an understanding of their application in surgical procedures

    • C&S experience is desirable but not required.

    • Strong organizational skills, with strong analytical, problem-solving, project management, and conflict analysis/resolution skills; Experience working independently with minimal guidance to develop approaches and solutions

    • Able to advance projects in an ambiguous environment, make independent decisions, drive action with limited data, and organize/prioritize/lead workstreams

    • Experience working on a multi-functional product development team with demonstration of leadership through encouraging and inclusive behaviors that inspire and develop others
