Friday: 7:00 a.m.–11:00 a.m.
Position Overview
Kelly Services is seeking a dependable and safety-conscious Baler for a contract-to-hire opportunity in Kankakee, Illinois. The Baler will help maintain a clean, organized, and safe manufacturing facility by collecting cardboard, plastic, and other designated recyclable materials from throughout the plant and processing them using industrial baling equipment.
This position reports to the Maintenance Department and may also support general labor, housekeeping, facility cleanup, and other plant-support activities as needed.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities
- Collect cardboard, plastic, and other designated recyclable materials from departments and collection areas throughout the facility.
- Transport recyclable materials safely to the designated baling and recycling area.
- Sort and separate materials as required.
- Safely operate cardboard and plastic baling equipment according to company procedures and safety requirements.
- Tie, remove, and properly stage completed bales for storage, recycling, or pickup.
- Load completed bales onto the designated trailer using a forklift after completing required training and receiving authorization.
- Monitor the bale trailer and notify leadership when it reaches approximately 75% capacity so pickup or replacement can be coordinated.
- Monitor bale wire supplies and notify a supervisor when opening the last available bundle.
- Routinely check collection areas to prevent excessive buildup of cardboard and plastic.
- Keep the baler area clean, organized, and free of unnecessary debris.
- Report equipment problems, damage, or safety concerns involving the baler or recycling areas to the Maintenance Supervisor.
- Follow all required safety procedures, including lockout/tagout procedures when applicable.
- Wear required personal protective equipment (PPE).
- Assist the Maintenance Department with general facility cleanup and other assigned tasks.
- Perform additional duties as needed to support plant operations.
Qualifications
- Ability to safely operate—or learn to operate—industrial baling equipment.
- Willingness and ability to complete forklift training and become authorized to operate a forklift.
- Ability to work independently and manage collection needs throughout the facility.
- Ability to follow written and verbal instructions.
- Strong commitment to workplace safety, housekeeping, and organization.
- Dependable attendance and ability to complete assigned responsibilities with minimal supervision.
- Previous manufacturing, warehouse, or industrial experience is preferred but not required.
- Physical Requirements and Work Environment
- Ability to stand and walk for extended periods throughout the workday.
- Ability to frequently bend, reach, push, pull, and lift materials.
- Ability to lift and carry up to 50 pounds as needed.
- Ability to safely move carts, bins, and other containers used to transport recyclable materials.
- Ability to work in a manufacturing and warehouse environment.
- Ability to follow facility safety procedures and wear required PPE.
