Position Overview
The Packaging Engineer is responsible for designing, testing, and implementing innovative packaging solutions as a critical part of the organization’s product development process. This role also focuses on evaluating and improving existing packaging to enhance functionality, performance, and cost efficiency.,
Key Responsibilities
- Lead the end-to-end packaging development process, including design, prototyping, testing, and implementation
- Troubleshoot packaging issues related to design, materials, and processes; deliver creative, timely, and cost-effective solutions
- Analyze engineering drawings and product specifications to determine packaging requirements (handling, environmental, safety, and materials)
- Develop and maintain packaging standards, guidelines, and specifications
- Evaluate, select, and manage packaging suppliers; conduct periodic vendor performance reviews
- Create packaging designs using computer-aided and mechanical design tools
- Review production samples and provide feedback to vendors for continuous improvement
- Collaborate cross-functionally with Product Development, Project Management, Engineering, Creative, Operations, Manufacturing, and global sourcing teams
- Apply packaging and shipping test methods to ensure performance under distribution conditions
- Conduct packaging experiments, validation testing, and production line trials
- Recommend and implement testing methods and efficiency tools
- Participate in packaging equipment selection and evaluation processes
- Author and update packaging and raw material specifications
- Ensure compliance with GMPs, quality standards, and safety requirements
- Support new product scale-up and manufacturing readiness
- Identify and implement cost-saving initiatives related to materials, labor, logistics, and storage
- Partner with Engineering to optimize the packaging supply base (cost, quality, lead time, compliance)
- Work with Manufacturing to ensure packaging designs are optimized for production
- Develop and execute comprehensive test plans to meet or exceed customer and regulatory requirements
Qualifications
- Bachelor’s degree in Packaging Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, or a related field
- Minimum of 5+ years of experience in industrial or consumer packaging
- Strong knowledge of packaging design validation standards (e.g., ISO, ASTM)
- Experience with packaging development for device-based products (required)
- Proficiency in engineering principles, material science, and packaging systems
- Experience with statistical process control and quality systems
- Strong problem-solving, analytical, and project management skills
- Excellent communication and cross-functional collaboration abilities
