About the Role
Are you passionate about precision and innovation? As a Model Maker Technician, you’ll play a pivotal role in building prototypes and first articles that drive the development of cutting-edge autonomous vehicles. Work alongside world-class engineers, designers, and fellow fabricators—your expertise in CNC machining, fabrication, and problem-solving will help transform ideas into reality.
Key Responsibilities
CNC Operation & Setup
- Set up, operate, and maintain CNC machines (mills, lathes, etc.) to create high-precision parts.
- Load/unload materials, align tooling, and calibrate machinery for optimal results.
- Monitor machine performance, troubleshoot issues, and conduct routine maintenance.
Fabrication & Machining
- Perform skilled metalwork (milling, turning, drilling, shearing, bending, welding).
- Work with composites, 3D printing, and advanced materials for prototyping.
- Use hand tools for deburring, finishing, and refining components.
Quality & Craftsmanship
- Inspect parts for quality and accuracy using precision measurement tools.
- Apply high standards of hand-finishing, deburring, and assembly.
- Troubleshoot and adjust processes to meet project requirements.
Shop Organization & Safety
- Keep your workspace clean, organized, and compliant with all safety protocols.
- Follow safe procedures for materials, chemicals, and waste.
Collaboration & Communication
- Partner with engineers, designers, and other model makers to optimize designs.
- Provide manufacturability feedback and maintain clear project communications.
Qualifications
Experience:
- 2+ years as a Model Maker, Fabricator, Machinist, or CNC Operator in prototyping/manufacturing.
- Skilled in reading engineering drawings, blueprints, and CAD models (SolidWorks, CATIA, etc.).
Technical Skills:
- Proficient with precision measuring tools (calipers, micrometers, CMM, etc.).
- Basic understanding of GD&T principles.
- Knowledgeable about shop safety and material handling best practices.
Soft Skills:
- Strong problem-solving and troubleshooting abilities.
- Effective communicator and collaborative team player.
- Eagerness to learn and adapt to new technologies.
Bonus Skills:
- Degree in industrial design, engineering, or related field.
- Familiarity with documentation tools (Jira, Confluence).
