To earn an RBT certification in Pennsylvania, you must:

    • Have at least a high school diploma or equivalent.
    • Pass a background check.
    • Complete 40 hours of training.
    • Pass a competency exam.

To maintain your RBT certification, you must demonstrate that you can competently perform the tasks on the RBT Renewal Competency Assessment.

What makes a great registered behavioral technician?

RBTs have a wide variety of skills; you can learn them both on the job and before you even start your next position. Some qualities of a great RBT include:

    Empathy and patience

Empathy and patience for the students you work with go hand-in-hand. You need to understand how students feel during your sessions and help them communicate those feelings.

You also need to know how to teach skills that help your students recognize how others are feeling so they can do it themselves. It can take time for students to catch on to these skills, so patience and encouragement are key.

    Observant

As an RBT in a school, you’ll work with students and collaborate with staff and parents. You can teach parents and teachers to identify signs of potential distress in your students and notice them yourself. This can be helpful when a student is overwhelmed by an exercise and may need a break.

You can also use these skills to identify when you need to provide more clarity for a task or ask questions about a particular reaction from a student.

    Open to growth

There is always room for improvement in any job, including a school-based RBT position. Your students, teachers, and supervisors may have feedback for you. It’s important to accept this feedback and consider how to implement it to be the best RBT you can be.

Benefits of working as a school-based registered behavioral technician.

Working as a school-based RBT is an incredibly rewarding experience for many people. You can work with students and then watch them employ the exercises and skills you’ve taught them to succeed in school, socialize more, and flourish in an academic environment.
