Pediatric therapist jobs in Delaware.

    October 31, 2024

Are you searching for pediatric therapist jobs in Delaware? You may find some openings in schools. Schools can be a great place to help children as they grow and develop.

How can I become a pediatric therapist in Delaware?

If you’re interested in working as a pediatric therapist, the first step in the process is to graduate high school or earn your GED. Most people go on to study psychology, child development, or social sciences and earn an undergraduate degree from a university. You can volunteer to work with children to get a jump on some early experience with children.

Some jobs may require an advanced degree, such as a master’s degree in counseling, speech therapy, occupational therapy, or physical therapy. In Delaware, a master’s degree is required for licensure. The Council for Accreditation of Counseling and Related Educational Programs must accredit the program.

When you’ve completed or are near completing your education, apply for state licensure. You may have to do work experience under a supervisor for a set period, as well as pass a background check. Lastly, you must pass a certification exam and keep up with continuing education requirements to maintain your certification.

Benefits of working as a school-based pediatric therapist

Working in a school has many unique benefits compared to an outpatient clinic or healthcare setting. You have an opportunity to watch students grow, develop, and achieve their academic and social goals because you’re part of the environment they spend most of their time in.

Every day at a school is going to be a little bit different than the day before. If you prefer variety in your days, a school is sure to provide it. You’ll also have a chance to work with children from many different backgrounds, struggles, and needs.

Helpful skills to develop for pediatric therapists

Being a pediatric therapist is not solely about the information you learn in school. There are skills you can develop that will help you perform better when working with children in school settings.

One of those key skills is playfulness. Children learn, process, and communicate in more ways than adults. Working with children may develop some creative new skills. Encouraging play and communication in a kid’s language can help build a relationship with that child. It can even aid in emotional regulation.

Practice being compassionate and open. Children are experiencing many things for the first time. Understanding how intense new experiences can be and how a child might feel can help you analyze behavior and offer comfort.
