How to become a paraprofessional in Indiana.

If you want to become a paraprofessional in Indiana, you’ll need to obtain a substitute permit and pass a background check. Note that some school districts require paraeducators to have more credentials than the state minimums, for example being at least 21 years old or having college credits.  

Minimum Indiana paraprofessional requirements, at a glance: 

  • At least 18 years old 
  • High school diploma or HSD/GED 
  • Indiana Substitute Permit 
  • Employment eligibility verification (I-9 form) 
  • Background check 
  • District-specific training or orientation 

In addition to Indiana state requirements, Kelly Education requires you to: 

  • complete our ParaSmarts pre-hire training course. 
  • attend a one-hour new hire orientation session. 

At Kelly Education, we use the term “paraeducator” for this position, as it highlights the same level of professionalism found in roles such as paramedic or paralegal. However, many school districts may use different titles, including parapro or teaching aide. Regardless of the title, the responsibilities typically include classroom support, assisting with technology, and working under the supervision of a licensed teacher. 

A deeper dive into paraprofessional requirements. 

Indiana requires that paraprofessionals acquire a substitute permit from the Indiana Department of Education. The permits are valid for three years and cost roughly $15. 

The onboarding process can take some time — typically ranging from a few days to a few weeks. The timeline largely depends on how quickly you complete each step. Promptly submitting your education verification and employment eligibility documents will also help the process move along smoothly.  

Education verification. 

If you’re interested in becoming a paraprofessional in Indiana, you’ll need to show proof that you’ve completed high school or earned a High School Equivalency (HSE). Usually, this means contacting your high school or adult education provider to request your transcripts.  

Some districts require some higher education credits. You’ll need to include those transcripts. Please note that some schools may charge a small fee to send official documents. They may also direct you to a service that handles transcripts. 

You may not need to take the ParaPro Assessment if you already have an associate degree or at least 48 college credit hours. But if you don’t, it’s a common requirement. The ParaPro is a 2.5-hour multiple-choice test from ETS that covers reading, writing, and math — both what you know and how you’d use those skills in the classroom. 

Indiana updated its requirements on September 1, 2025. The new ParaPathways Assessment will begin to replace the ParaPro. Both tests will be accepted through August 31, 2026. However, only the ParaPathways test will be accepted after that date. You can take these exams at testing centers across the state, and some school districts may even offer guidance or financial help. It’s always a good idea to check with the district where you want to work to find out their specific score requirements. 

Employment verification. 

To work as a paraprofessional in Indiana schools, you must verify that you’re legally authorized to work in the United States. This verification process involves completing the federal I-9 form and providing the required identification documents, such as a passport or driver’s license, along with a Social Security card.

Background screening. 

All paraprofessionals in Indiana are required to undergo a criminal background check as part of the hiring process. These steps are essential for ensuring the safety and well-being of students. Depending on the district or employer, a small fee may be involved, and results can take several days to process. To avoid delays, it’s best to begin this step as early as possible once you start your application. 

Training and professional development. 

Training requirements for paraprofessionals in Indiana can vary depending on the school district and the specific role they hold. Suppose you’ll be supporting students who receive special education services. In that case, you may be required to complete training aligned with the Individuals with Disabilities Education Act (IDEA) to ensure you’re equipped to meet their needs effectively. 

Some districts offer structured onboarding programs, including pre-service orientation and ongoing professional development. Others may provide role-specific training throughout the school year. Regardless of formal requirements, earning certifications in First Aid and CPR is highly recommended. These skills not only enhance student safety but also make you a more valuable member of the school team. Courses are generally affordable, and some employers may cover the cost.
